Your credit card may offer travel protection, but is it sufficient for the trip you’ve invested so much in? Credit card coverage can come with specific eligibility requirements, exclusions, limits, and restrictions that may not align with your itinerary.
- Understand what’s actually covered – Trip cancellation and interruption benefits can vary significantly. Look closely at covered reasons.
- Review medical coverage – Check emergency medical expenses, evacuation and repatriation benefits, coverage limits, and whether pre-existing conditions are addressed.
- Look at the limits – A benefit may sound generous until you compare the maximum reimbursement with the actual cost of your trip. Luxury accommodations, suites, private tours, and other prepaid arrangements can add up quickly.
- Read the exclusions – Pay attention to exclusions involving pre-existing conditions, adventure activities, weather, strikes, travel advisories, and other circumstances that could affect your claim.
- Check the payment requirements – Some credit-card benefits require you to charge all of the trip to that card. Know the rules before assuming you’re covered.
- Consider who is covered – Coverage for traveling companions and family members who are not traveling can vary, as can eligibility based on your relationship to the cardholder.
- Read evacuation coverage carefully – For international and remote destinations, medical evacuation can be one of the most important benefits to evaluate. Understand both the dollar limit and the circumstances under which evacuation is covered.
Your credit card’s travel protections can be a valuable benefit, but it shouldn’t automatically be considered a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance. For an expensive or complex itinerary, an international trip, or a cruise, take the time to understand exactly what you’re protected against and where the gaps may be.
